Criminals Getting Smarter in Cyberspace (archived)

The usage of Anonymous Proxies has risen significantly in the past 6 months according to specialist Internet Fraud and Security provider, Eunexus. This is concerning news to online organisations experiencing Internet Fraud, as it indicates criminals are getting smarter at evading basic online fraud detection systems.

Director of Eunexus Dylan Foo, "We have identified a significant increase in anonymous proxy activity in Australia through our custom built Global Internet Intelligence tracking systems. This increase poses a serious threat to any firm which undertakes online fraud detection activities and indicates cyber criminals have an even greater ability to hide themselves and their true location whilst committing fraud. Whilst this new probably comes as little surprise to the online industry the challenge for banks is to now identify ways to overcome these techniques".

Eunexus is a niche provider of Internet fraud and security products. Eunexus clients include a number of Australia's largest online banks and trading organisations.

Background: What is an anonymous Proxy?

Every machine that connects to the Internet has an Internet Protocol address, sort of like a postal address for the Internet it enables computers all over the world to find each other. Companies can use IP information for fraud detection purposes, for instance if a small US Online bank suddenly identifies hundreds of IPs connecting from Eastern Europe, it may indicate something suspicious is taking place.

An 'anonymous proxy' allows a user to hide their true location (true IP address) whilst browsing the internet. Anonymous proxies work by allowing users to freely browse the Internet via their Internet connection, thus anonymising the original users' location.
