Cybercrime Spreading Across African Nations (archived)
August, 2007 News Archive
The past three months have seen increased fraudulent online banking activity originating from African nations, according to specialist Internet Security and Fraud provider, Eunexus. In the past, Nigeria has been a well known hotspot of activity; however Eunexus notes an increase in other African nations such as Ghana and the Ivory Coast. Using custom built Internet Intelligence systems Eunexus has identified a significant spike in malicious behaviour from the region and a stabilisation of malicious behaviour originating from Nigeria.
Technical Director Benn Dullard announced "Historically a lot of online scams have been associated with Nigeria, such as the widely known Nigerian 419 scams. Now, it will not come as a big surprise to security professionals to see this sort of activity organically spread to nearby nations. The important thing to note is the positive steps that online banks in Australia have taken to identify and counteract these geographic based activities."
