Tips for Safe Online Banking
February, 2011 Current News
In a recent roundtable debate at the 2011 European Banking fraud conference, Eunexus Director Dylan Foo argued the case that consumers also have a minimum level of responsibility to ensure safe online banking. Some of the pointers suggested included:
- Being cautious, if not suspicious of emails which are supposedly from your bank. Keep passwords safe; always be wary of unsolicited emails or calls asking you to disclose any personal details or card numbers. Your bank, or even the police would never contact you to ask you to disclose your PIN.
- Never give your login / password details in full by email or over the phone – your banks will never request these in this way.
- Make sure your computer has up-to-date anti-virus software and a firewall installed. Consider using anti-spyware software. Download the latest security updates, known as patches, for your browser and for your operating system (e.g. Windows). Some banks even make recommendations on which packages to download
According to Dylan "Following these simple tips goes a long way to ensuring the ongoing protection of your online banking, and even more importantly, your Identity".
